How much does Google Ads cost in 2026?
By Christian Bozic, Founder of Marketing AIgency · Updated · 9 min read
Short answer
Google Ads has no minimum spend: you set a daily budget and pay per click. Across industries, the average search click cost $5.42 and the average lead $66.69 in the 2026 LocaliQ and WordStream benchmarks, from $1.63 per click in arts and entertainment to $9.87 for lawyers. European ecommerce pays far less per click, with a median of €0.43 on Search in September 2026 (smec). At those averages, $1,000 to $2,000 a month buys roughly 15 to 30 leads.
Key takeaways
- You pay per click, and never more than your maximum bid. Google charges only what you need to beat the ad ranked below you.
- Average search CPC across industries: $5.42. Average cost per lead: $66.69 (LocaliQ and WordStream, June 2026).
- Budget per month = conversions you want × expected cost per conversion. 30 leads at $66.69 is about $2,000.
- Google can spend up to 2 times your daily budget on one day, but not more than 30.4 times it in a month.
- Add management, landing pages, tools and country surcharges of 2 to 5% in some countries to the media budget.
How much does Google Ads cost?
Google Ads costs whatever you decide to spend, and the price of each click depends on your industry, your country and the quality of your ads. There is no fixed price list. You set an average daily budget, bid in an auction and pay when someone clicks. The benchmarks below show what advertisers actually paid in 2026.
| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Average search CPC, all industries | $5.42 | LocaliQ and WordStream, June 2026 |
| Average cost per lead, all industries | $66.69 | LocaliQ and WordStream, June 2026 |
| Average click-through rate | 6.64% | LocaliQ and WordStream, June 2026 |
| Average conversion rate | 8.18% | LocaliQ and WordStream, June 2026 |
| Median Search CPC, European ecommerce | €0.43 | smec, 21 September 2026 |
| Median Shopping CPC, European ecommerce | €0.36 | smec, 21 September 2026 |
| Minimum spend | None, you set your own daily budget | Google Ads Help |
The LocaliQ numbers come from thousands of customer campaigns on Google Ads and Microsoft Ads (LocaliQ, 2026). The report notes that cost per lead fell overall for the first time in five years, while CPCs kept rising. The smec numbers are medians across €650 million in European ad spend by online retailers (smec Market Observer). Retail clicks are cheaper, partly because many searches are for low-priced products, while a lawyer or a roofer pays for a lead worth thousands.
How does the Google Ads auction set your cost per click?
Your CPC is set in an auction that runs for every search, and the winner pays only what is needed to stay ahead of the next advertiser. Google calls the position score Ad Rank. It combines your maximum bid, the expected quality of your ad at auction time, the context of the search and the expected effect of your assets.
Actual CPC = the minimum needed to clear the Ad Rank thresholds and beat the Ad Rank of the advertiser directly below you, never more than your maximum bid
Google puts it this way: "You only pay what's minimally required to clear the Ad Rank thresholds and beat the Ad Rank of the competitor immediately below you." If nobody is below you, you pay the reserve price. Positions above the search results have higher thresholds, so the top spots cost more (Google Ads Help).
Quality Score is Google's 1 to 10 rating per keyword, built from expected click-through rate, ad relevance and landing page experience. Google states that Quality Score itself "is not an input in the ad auction". It is a diagnostic. The three things it measures do feed into auction-time quality, though, which is why a relevant ad and a fast, matching landing page lower what you pay (Google Ads Help).
What does a Google Ads click cost by industry?
In the benchmarks, industry makes the biggest difference. Legal, home services and dental pay the most because one customer is worth a lot. Entertainment, restaurants and travel pay the least.
| Industry | Avg. CPC | Conversion rate | Cost per lead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Attorneys and legal services | $9.87 | 5.55% | $131.63 |
| Home and home improvement | $8.33 | 8.05% | $90.92 |
| Dentists and dental services | $8.00 | 10.67% | $72.97 |
| Personal services | $7.17 | 12.34% | $54.60 |
| Health and fitness | $6.17 | 6.94% | $67.36 |
| Business services | $5.87 | 4.85% | $93.69 |
| Education and instruction | $4.81 | 13.14% | $77.48 |
| Apparel, fashion and jewelry | $4.44 | 4.50% | $97.51 |
| Finance and insurance | $3.39 | 2.64% | $74.44 |
| Real estate | $3.22 | 3.70% | $102.51 |
| Travel | $2.14 | 5.83% | $44.70 |
| Restaurants and food | $2.05 | 8.05% | $30.57 |
A cheap click is not automatically a cheap customer. Finance pays $3.39 per click but converts only 2.64% of clicks, so its cost per lead ends up higher than personal services with more than double the CPC. Always judge on cost per lead or sale.
What does a click cost in the US, Germany and Spain?
The same kind of search costs very different amounts by country. We pulled Google Keyword Planner data in September 2026 for comparable searches in three markets. The ranges show what advertisers have historically bid for a position at the top of the page. Keyword Planner reports bids in the currency of the account that runs the query. Ours is billed in euros, so every value in this table is in EUR, the US rows included.
| Market | Search term | Searches per month | Top-of-page bid range in EUR, low to high |
|---|---|---|---|
| US | google ads cost | 3,600 | €8.30 to €243.13 |
| US | pay per click agencies | 5,400 | €17.72 to €109.67 |
| Germany, Austria, Switzerland | google ads agentur | 1,900 | €13.53 to €60.68 |
| Germany, Austria, Switzerland | google ads kosten | 1,300 | €2.81 to €32.04 |
| Spain | agencia google ads | 1,000 | €2.79 to €13.14 |
| Spain | agencia sem | 880 | €4.02 to €12.63 |
The agency searches show the pattern: a click on a PPC agency search costs several times more in the US than in Spain. Your own keywords will differ, so check them in Keyword Planner before you set a budget. The benchmark tables above are the better guide for a first estimate, because single-keyword ranges swing widely.
How much should you budget for Google Ads per month?
Work backwards from the number of conversions you need. Smart Bidding needs data, and a campaign that gets three clicks a day learns slowly. A useful rule of thumb from our own account work is to plan enough budget for at least 15 to 30 conversions a month per campaign.
Monthly budget = conversions you want per month × expected cost per conversion
Average daily budget = monthly budget ÷ 30.4
Google allows a campaign to spend up to 2 times its average daily budget on a single day, and caps the month at 30.4 times the daily budget (Google Ads Help). For Performance Max, Google recommends a daily budget of at least 3 times your CPA (Google Ads Help). At the average cost per lead of $66.69, that is about $200 a day or $6,080 a month. Our Performance Max guide covers when that pays off.
| Business | Monthly budget | Avg. CPC | Clicks | Conversion rate | Expected leads or orders |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Restaurant or café | $600 | $2.05 | about 290 | 8.05% | about 24 |
| Dental practice | $2,000 | $8.00 | 250 | 10.67% | about 27 |
| Home improvement | $2,500 | $8.33 | about 300 | 8.05% | about 24 |
| Law firm | $3,000 | $9.87 | about 300 | 5.55% | about 17 |
| B2B services | $2,000 | $5.87 | about 340 | 4.85% | about 17 |
| Online shop in Europe | €1,500 | €0.43 | about 3,500 | 2% (assumption) | about 70 |
CPC and conversion rates come from LocaliQ (US) and smec (European ecommerce). The 2% shop conversion rate is an example assumption, not a benchmark. Replace every input with your own numbers once you have a month of data, and compare cost per lead with what a customer is worth to you. Our ROAS calculator shows the break-even for online shops.
How can you lower your Google Ads costs?
Most savings come from paying for fewer wrong clicks, not from cheaper clicks. These are the levers we check first in an account.
- Count real conversions. Track leads or sales that exist in your CRM or shop, not page views or button clicks. Otherwise bidding optimises for the wrong thing.
- Review search terms weekly. Add negative keywords for searches that never convert, such as jobs, free or DIY terms.
- Match ad and landing page to the search. Ad relevance and landing page experience are two of the three Quality Score components and feed into what you pay.
- Separate brand and non-brand. Brand searches are cheap and convert well. Mixed in one campaign, they hide how expensive new customers really are.
- Be careful with broad expansion. In smec's analysis of more than 250 Search campaigns, AI Max raised revenue by a median 13% but also CPA by 16% (Search Engine Journal, March 2026).
- Check auto-applied recommendations. Once switched on, Google applies eligible recommendations regularly without asking each time (Google Ads Help).
- Limit time and place. Cut hours and regions where leads are poor or nobody can answer the phone.
How does Marketing AIgency help with Google Ads costs?
Marketing AIgency is software from CBX Media LLC. AI agents check your ad accounts, study the numbers before they propose anything and put every proposal with its reasoning into an approval queue. Only what you approve runs. Guards check budgets and ads every 30 to 60 minutes depending on the plan, around the clock, so a campaign that overspends on a Saturday gets flagged the same day. The agents steer on your real revenue or leads from Shopify, a CRM, a spreadsheet or a first-party pixel, and every change is logged with its effect measured after 7 days.
Current status: Meta is fully live. Google Ads connects the same way with one-click login and runs like Meta. Pricing is a fixed monthly fee with no share of ad spend (pricing).
Frequently asked questions
Is there a minimum budget for Google Ads?
No. Google sets no minimum spend. In practice you need enough budget for regular conversions, otherwise Smart Bidding has too little data. For Performance Max, Google recommends a daily budget of at least 3 times your CPA.
How much does Google Ads cost per month for a small business?
At the 2026 average cost per lead of $66.69, $1,000 to $2,000 a month buys roughly 15 to 30 leads. Restaurants can start lower, law firms usually need more. Calculate it from the leads you need times your expected cost per lead.
Why did Google spend more than my daily budget?
Google can spend up to 2 times your average daily budget on a busy day. Over the month it will not charge more than 30.4 times your daily budget, so quieter days balance it out.
What is a good cost per click on Google Ads?
One that leads to a profitable customer. The cross-industry average was $5.42 in 2026, but a $10 click for a lawyer can be cheap and a $2 click for a shop expensive. Judge on cost per lead or sale against customer value.
Do I pay for impressions on Google Ads?
On search campaigns with cost-per-click bidding you pay only when someone clicks. Some display and video campaigns can be billed per impression or view, depending on the bid strategy.
