Marketing AIgency vs. a performance marketing agency

By Christian Bozic, Founder of Marketing AIgency · Updated · 16 min read

Short answer

A performance marketing agency usually charges 10 to 20% of your ad spend or a monthly retainer, often with a minimum fee, a setup fee and a fixed term. If what you mainly need is someone who watches your Meta, Google or TikTok accounts and adjusts them every day, AI agent software with approval does that around the clock at a flat monthly price with no share of ad spend. If you need strategy, brand work or video production, an agency is still the better buy, and many teams run both side by side.

Key takeaways

  • Typical agency pricing: 10 to 20% of monthly ad spend or a flat retainer, often plus a minimum and a setup fee (AgencyAnalytics, updated August 2026).
  • At $50,000 a month in spend, a 12% fee is $72,000 a year. A percentage grows with your budget whether results improve or not.
  • A retainer buys hours: at an assumed $100 to $150 an hour, $2,250 a month is 15 to 22.5 hours. The watchers check budgets and ads every 30 to 60 minutes depending on the plan, nights and weekends included.
  • Agencies are stronger at strategy, brand and video. Software is stronger at constant watching, logged reasons for every change and steering on real company revenue.
  • Whatever you choose, the ad account, pixel and pages should sit in your own business portfolio.

Should you use an agency or AI software?

It depends on which problem you are paying to solve. Most performance marketing budgets pay for two very different jobs. The first is thinking: offer, positioning, channel mix, creative concepts. The second is operating: checking the accounts, shifting budget, pausing ads that stopped working, scaling the ones that work and reporting on it. Agencies sell both in one retainer. Software like Marketing AIgency takes over the operating part and leaves the decisions with you.

After twelve years on both sides of that table, at agencies and on the client side, this is the honest split:

  • Choose software if you have working ads and a clear offer, and you mainly need the account watched and adjusted every day at a cost that does not grow with your budget.
  • Choose an agency if you do not yet know what to say to whom, need video or creator content, or have nobody in-house who can approve changes.
  • Combine both if an agency does your strategy and creative work well but cannot watch the account at night, on weekends or during a sale.

The calculator above puts your own agency quote next to the plan that fits your ad spend, so you can check the numbers for your situation before reading on.

How much does a performance marketing agency cost?

Agencies price in three ways: a percentage of ad spend, a flat retainer, or a hybrid where you pay whichever is greater. AgencyAnalytics puts the usual range at 10 to 20% of monthly ad spend and says flat fees for small and mid-sized clients typically start at $500 to $2,000 a month, while larger or more complex accounts may exceed $5,000 (AgencyAnalytics, updated August 2026).

Agency pricing models, as of September 2026

Hybrid with minimumMinimum fee or percentage, whichever is greaterThe minimum applies in slow months too

One large US agency publishes its structure for Facebook ads: $1,975 for the first month, then $975 or 15% of ad spend, whichever is greater, for budgets of $1,000 to $30,000. Above $30,000 it charges $4,250 in month one, then $4,500 or 12% (WebFX, as of September 2026). For full-service agencies that also handle strategy and creative for small and mid-sized advertisers, the typical range we see in the market is roughly $2,000 to $6,000 a month. That is our founder's observation, not survey data, so compare it with the quotes you actually get.

What does an agency cost at $5k, $15k, $50k and $150k in monthly ad spend?

A percentage looks small until you multiply it by twelve. The table applies the published WebFX structure to four budgets. Your agency will quote different numbers, so treat it as a worked example and swap in your own.

Yearly agency cost = max(minimum fee, fee % × monthly ad spend) × 12, plus setup or first-month fees

Agency fee at four budgets, ongoing months, as of September 2026
Monthly ad spendAgency fee per monthEffective rateAgency fee per yearHours bought at an assumed $100 to $150 an hour
$5,000$975 (minimum applies)19.5%$11,700about 6.5 to 10
$15,000$2,250 (15%)15%$27,00015 to 22.5
$50,000$6,000 (12% tier)12%$72,00040 to 60
$150,000$18,000 (12% tier)12%$216,000120 to 180

Two things stand out. Small budgets pay the most in relative terms, because the minimum fee does the work. And the fee grows in a straight line with spend, so the agency earns more when you spend more, whether or not each extra dollar pays back. The hourly rate of $100 to $150 is our assumption to translate fees into attention; ask your agency for its own figure.

Marketing AIgency does not take a share of your ad spend. You pay a fixed monthly plan price. Every plan includes the Performance team, the Creative team and the Co-Pilot; the plans differ in how often the agents optimize: twice a day, four times a day or Always On. Vibe Reporting and Pages & CRO are always included; add-ons such as Attribution and Unlimited Creatives can be booked on any plan. Paying yearly saves 20%. The current plans and prices:

What do you actually get each month?

With an agency you buy hours of attention. With software you buy constant checks and a queue of proposals. The difference shows when you lay a month side by side.

The hours in a retainer cover everything: checks, changes, reporting, calls and internal handovers. Routine work alone is substantial. In DoubleVerify's 2025 Global Insights survey of 1,970 marketers, respondents spent 10 hours and 12 minutes a week on routine tasks such as bid changes and budget allocation (ppc.land on DoubleVerify, August 2025). That adds up to about 44 hours a month. At our assumed $100 to $150 an hour, a $975 retainer buys 6.5 to 10 of them. In our experience, reporting on smaller retainers is usually one monthly report or call, and weekly updates come with bigger budgets.

ReportingIn our experience monthly, weekly on larger retainersLive in the app; ask the Co-Pilot for any report in any language

Here is what that looks like in practice. A connected-car app has run its advertising on the same agent system since September 14, 2026, across nine markets on Meta, Google and TikTok, with about €470,000 in monthly ad budget. In the first 11 days the agents made 316 proposals. The team executed 101 and rejected 69 with a reason, and those rejections feed back into later proposals. The people still made the calls. The software did the watching.

Who is in control, and how transparent is each option?

With an agency, control depends on the contract and the relationship. Some agencies ask before every budget change, many act first and report later. That is not bad faith; it is how a retainer with limited hours works. The ad platforms keep a change history, but it shows what changed, not why.

With Marketing AIgency, nothing runs without your say. New accounts start in shadow mode, where the agents analyze and propose but execute nothing until you want them to. After that, every proposal waits in the approval queue with its reasoning. When you trust a type of action, you can set it to autonomous within limits, for example budget changes up to a set size, and keep everything else on approval. The Co-Pilot explains any proposal on request and can protect campaigns for you, for example: never touch campaigns with "brand" in the name.

Who owns the ad account, pixel and data?

You should, in both cases. The clean setup is that your ad account, pixel or dataset, Facebook page and Instagram account sit in your own business portfolio and the agency gets partner access (Meta Business Help Center). In practice, accounts are sometimes created inside the agency's own portfolio, which makes leaving harder than it should be. Ask about this before you sign, not when you give notice.

Marketing AIgency works inside your existing accounts. It does not move them anywhere. If you disconnect, the accounts, campaigns, pixel and history stay exactly where they were: with you.

How fast does each react at night, on weekends and on Black Friday?

Most agencies work office hours unless you agree on more and pay for it. That is fine for most weeks. It hurts when an ad set starts overspending on Friday evening, when a pixel breaks after a site update on Saturday, or during a sale where budgets are several times higher and every hour counts.

The watchers check budget and ads every 30 to 60 minutes depending on the plan, including nights, weekends and holidays. What they find goes into your approval queue as a proposal with its reason. If you have set chosen action types to autonomous, those run within the limits you set. Before a peak like Black Friday you can give the Co-Pilot standing instructions for the agents, such as which campaigns to leave alone or how far a budget may move.

Which number does each steer on: platform ROAS or company revenue?

Many agency reports lead with the ROAS each ad platform reports. Those numbers overlap, because Meta, Google and TikTok each claim credit for the same sale. A report that adds them up can look far better than your bank account.

The size of that gap is not theoretical. For the connected-car app mentioned above, Meta, Google and TikTok together claimed 2.2 times the revenue the company actually made in Germany in September 2026. Google alone reported €31.3k, while the company booked €23.4k in total.

Marketing AIgency steers on the company number: real revenue or real leads from Shopify, your CRM, a Google Sheet or our own first-party pixel. The Attribution add-on adds a post-purchase survey and sends conversions back to Meta through the Conversions API. How the gap arises and how to measure it is explained in our true ROAS guide, and the ROAS calculator shows your break-even point. Whichever option you pick, ask for reporting on company revenue.

Who makes the ads?

Creative production is where good agencies earn their money. Shoots, creator partnerships, video editing and a steady flow of fresh concepts are craft work, and a strong creative team is hard to replace with software.

Marketing AIgency has a Creative team in every plan. It builds static image ads from what has already worked in your account, with a monthly quota per plan; the Unlimited Creatives add-on lifts that quota. It does not make videos. If video or creator content drives your results, keep a person or an agency for that part.

Who handles strategy and brand?

An agency does, and this is its clearest strength. Positioning, pricing, entering a new market or rebuilding a brand needs people who talk to you and your customers and bring experience from many accounts in your industry. Software reads your numbers well. It does not sit in your sales meeting.

What the Co-Pilot does is explain the numbers behind each proposal and build reports on request, typed or dictated, in any language. That helps you make strategic decisions with better data. It does not make them for you.

How long does onboarding take?

From what we see in the market, an agency onboarding typically takes two to six weeks (our observation, not survey data): kickoff, access requests, audit, new structure, tracking checks. Building a new account is real work; for a new Google search account, AgencyAnalytics cites an estimate of 15 to 25 hours (AgencyAnalytics).

With Marketing AIgency you connect an ad account and the first analysis runs right away, in shadow mode. You get 14 days free, no card. The trial starts with your first connected ad account and includes approvals and execution. For companies with no running ads, there is a one-off Kickstart package where we build the first Meta campaign with you over 30 days, without a subscription. Platform status: Meta is fully live. Google Ads and TikTok connect the same way with one-click login and run like Meta. Building campaigns, copying winners and geo tests run on Meta only for now.

What are the contract terms, and how do you cancel?

In the market we see, agency contracts often run three to twelve months, with a notice period on top. That is our observation, not survey data. Some agencies work month to month, sometimes after a minimum first term. Read the clauses on notice, setup fees and who owns the work produced.

Marketing AIgency is billed monthly, and you can cancel any time. There is no share of ad spend. Yearly billing is optional and saves 20%. The 14-day trial needs no card. It ends by itself, and nothing is charged.

When is an agency the better choice?

Software does not replace everything an agency does. Hire an agency, or keep yours, in these situations:

  • You have no working offer or message yet. Before there is anything to optimize, you need people who help you find what to say and to whom.
  • Your results depend on video. If creator content, UGC or filmed ads drive your sales, you need producers, not a Creative team that makes static ads.
  • Nobody on your side can approve proposals. Approval needs an owner who reads a proposal and decides in minutes. Without that person, a full-service agency fits better.
  • You mainly need a Google or TikTok build from scratch today. Campaign building runs on Meta only for now, so an agency or freelancer is faster there.
  • You run brand campaigns, PR or offline media alongside. Media planning across many channels is outside what ad account agents do.

Can you combine an agency with AI agents?

Yes, and for many companies this is the best setup. The agency keeps what it is good at: strategy, concepts and video. The agents take over the daily watching and the recurring changes, around the clock, and log every step.

  1. Agree who approves proposals: you, the agency or both.
  2. Tell the Co-Pilot which campaigns to leave alone, for example the ones the agency is testing.
  3. Let the agency see the activity log, so both sides know what changed and why.
  4. Review the 7-day effect measurements together in your regular meeting instead of a separate report.
  5. Renegotiate the retainer toward creative and strategy hours once the routine work no longer sits with the agency.

How do you switch from an agency without losing data?

Most switching problems come from ownership and timing, not from performance. Work through this list before you give notice:

  1. Check that the ad accounts sit in your own Meta business portfolio and Google Ads account, with the agency added as a partner or linked manager account.
  2. Confirm that the pixel or dataset and the Conversions API setup belong to your portfolio.
  3. Make sure you are admin of the Facebook page, the Instagram account and your verified domain.
  4. Collect creative files, audiences, catalogs, UTM conventions and naming rules.
  5. Export at least 12 months of reporting.
  6. Read the notice period and plan the handover around it.
  7. Connect Marketing AIgency first and run it in shadow mode next to the agency. Remove the agency's access last.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best alternative to a marketing agency?

It depends on the work you need covered. For daily account management on Meta, Google and TikTok, AI agent software with approval is the closest alternative at a flat price. For strategy and video, a freelancer or a smaller specialist agency is the usual alternative.

How much does a Facebook ads agency cost per month?

Most charge 10 to 20% of monthly ad spend or a retainer from about $500 to $2,000 for smaller accounts, often with a minimum and a setup fee. One published example is $975 or 15% of spend, whichever is greater, after a $1,975 first month (WebFX, September 2026).

Can AI software replace a performance marketing agency completely?

No. It replaces the recurring operating work: checking, diagnosing, proposing and executing approved changes. Strategy, brand and video production still need people.

Do I lose control if AI agents manage my ads?

Not with an approval setup. New accounts start in shadow mode, every proposal waits for your approval with its reasoning, and only action types you choose run autonomously within limits you set.

Is a percentage of ad spend or a flat retainer better?

A flat fee is easier to plan and does not reward spending more. A percentage can make sense when the agency's work really grows with the budget. Check the effective rate at your spend, including minimums.

How long does it take to switch from an agency to software?

Connecting an ad account takes minutes, and the first analysis runs right away. Plan the full switch around your notice period and run both side by side for a few weeks.
