How to run Facebook and Instagram ads for the first time in 2026
By Christian Bozic, Founder of Marketing AIgency · Updated · 11 min read
Short answer
To run Facebook ads in 2026, you create a business portfolio, add an ad account with a payment method, connect your Facebook Page and Instagram account, and install the Meta pixel plus the Conversions API. Then you build one campaign in Ads Manager with the Sales or Leads objective, keep Advantage+ on, and give one ad set enough budget for about 50 conversions a week. Launch with 3 to 6 different ads and leave the setup alone for at least 7 days.
Key takeaways
- Use Ads Manager, not the Boost button. Boosted posts cannot optimize for purchases or leads on your website.
- Tracking comes before the first euro: Meta pixel plus Conversions API, tested in Events Manager.
- Pick Sales or Leads as the objective and keep the Advantage+ defaults for your first campaign.
- Budget rule of thumb: one ad set needs about 50 × target cost per result per week to leave the learning phase.
- One campaign, one ad set, 3 to 6 ads. Most first campaigns fail from too many ad sets and too many edits, not from bad targeting.
What do you need before you run Facebook ads?
You need five things before an ad can go live: a business portfolio, an ad account, a payment method, a Facebook Page (with your Instagram account linked) and a way to measure results. Everything else, including targeting, is set inside the campaign. The table shows what each piece does and where you set it up.
| What | Why you need it | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Business portfolio (formerly Business Manager) | Holds your Page, Instagram account, ad account, pixel and user access under the company, not a single person | business.facebook.com |
| Ad account | Where campaigns, billing and reports live. A new portfolio can usually create only one ad account at first; the limit grows with spend and payment history | Business settings, Accounts, Ad accounts |
| Payment method | Ads do not deliver without one. Card, PayPal or local methods depending on country | Billing and payments |
| Facebook Page and Instagram account | Every ad runs under an identity. Instagram ads in Ads Manager need the account connected to your portfolio | Business settings, Accounts |
| Meta pixel and Conversions API | Tell Meta who bought or signed up, so it can find more of those people | Events Manager |
| A landing page that loads fast on mobile | Most clicks come from phones. A slow page wastes the budget you just paid for | Your website or shop |
Meta's reach is not the bottleneck. Its apps averaged 3.60 billion daily active people in June 2026, according to Meta's Q2 2026 results. The same report shows the average price per ad up 12% year over year, which is one more reason to get tracking and structure right before you spend.
How do you create a Facebook ad step by step?
Follow these ten steps in order. Steps 1 to 5 are one-time setup, steps 6 to 10 are the campaign itself. Plan about two hours if your website already has a checkout or form.
- Create a business portfolio at business.facebook.com with your company name and business email.
- Add your Facebook Page and connect your Instagram professional account in Business settings.
- Create an ad account inside the portfolio. Set time zone and currency carefully, you cannot change them later.
- Add a payment method under Billing and payments.
- Create a dataset (pixel) in Events Manager, install it on your site and set up the Conversions API. Many shop systems do both through an official Meta integration.
- Open Ads Manager, click Create and choose Sales (shops) or Leads (services, B2B).
- Keep Advantage+ campaign budget and Advantage+ audience on. Add a location, and only add age or other limits that are legal or hard business constraints.
- Set one ad set with a daily budget based on the learning formula below and choose your conversion event, for example Purchase or Lead.
- Upload 3 to 6 ads that differ in idea, not just in color: a testimonial, an offer, a product demo, a comparison.
- Preview every placement, publish, and write the launch date down. Most ads are reviewed within 24 hours.
How do the Meta pixel and the Conversions API work together?
The pixel reports events from the browser, the Conversions API reports the same events from your server. Meta recommends running both side by side, which it calls a redundant setup, because browsers, ad blockers and consent choices cut off part of the pixel data.
When both send the same purchase, Meta must count it once. Per Meta's developer documentation, that works when the pixel's event ID and name match the event_id and event_name sent by the server, and both arrive within 48 hours. If your shop plugin handles this, you only need to check it.
- Open Events Manager, use Test events and place a real test order or submit your own form.
- Check that the event shows up from both the browser and the server, and that it is marked as deduplicated.
- Compare the purchase value Meta received with the value in your shop.
- Only then publish the campaign. Fixing tracking after launch means the first week of learning used wrong data.
Which campaign objective should you choose: sales or leads?
Choose the objective that matches the money event. If people pay on your website, choose Sales and optimize for Purchase. If people send an inquiry, book a call or request a quote, choose Leads and optimize for the lead event on your site or an instant form. Traffic and Engagement look cheaper per click, but Meta then finds people who click or like, not people who buy.
| Business | Objective | Optimization event | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online shop | Sales | Purchase | If purchases are rare, start with Add to cart and switch once volume grows |
| Local service (salon, car care, trades) | Leads | Lead or call | Instant forms are fast but bring more low-quality leads. Ask one qualifying question |
| B2B or consulting | Leads | Lead on your website | Feed qualified leads from your CRM back to Meta later |
| App | App promotion | Install or in-app event | Needs the Meta SDK or a measurement partner |
Which Advantage+ settings should you keep on?
For a first campaign, keep the defaults. Since Meta merged the manual and Advantage+ setups, new Sales, Leads and App campaigns start with Advantage+ switched on: campaign budget, audience and placements. Meta reports 10% lower cost per qualified lead for Leads campaigns with Advantage+ on, on its Advantage+ leads page. That is Meta's own figure without a published study period, so read it as a reason to start there, not as a promise.
- Advantage+ audience: keep on. Add your location. Interests work as suggestions, not hard limits.
- Advantage+ placements: keep on. Your ads then run on Facebook, Instagram, Reels, Stories and more, which is why you need square, 4:5 and 9:16 versions.
- Advantage+ campaign budget: keep on with one ad set. It only matters once you add more. Our CBO vs ABO guide explains when to switch.
- Advantage+ creative enhancements: check each option. Some change your text or image. Turn off anything that would break brand or legal rules.
How much budget do you need for your first Facebook campaign?
Enough for about 50 conversions per ad set per week. Meta's help center says an ad set leaves the learning phase after about 50 optimization events within 7 days. Below that, delivery keeps shifting and costs stay unstable. So the budget follows from your target cost per purchase or lead, not from a round number.
Weekly budget per ad set ≈ 50 × target cost per result | Daily ≈ 7 × target cost per result
| Daily budget | Budget per week | Expected purchases per week | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| €20 | €140 | about 5 | Optimize for Add to cart or a lead event until sales volume grows |
| €50 | €350 | about 12 | One ad set only. Expect Learning limited and judge over 14 days |
| €150 | €1,050 | about 35 | One ad set, close to stable learning |
| €215 | €1,505 | about 50 | Enough for one ad set to exit learning |
If you do not know your target cost per purchase yet, work it out from your margin with the ROAS calculator. For typical CPMs and cost per click by country, see how much Facebook and Instagram ads cost.
What makes a good first Facebook ad?
A good first ad makes one clear promise in the first second, shows the product or result, and matches the page it links to. Creative now does most of the targeting on Meta: with broad audiences, the ad itself decides who stops scrolling. Give the system different ideas to work with, not ten versions of the same photo.
- Formats: at least one 4:5 image or video for Feed and one 9:16 version for Stories and Reels.
- Text: primary text of 50 to 150 characters and a headline of about 27, as Meta's Ads Guide recommends.
- Proof: a real customer quote, a number or a before and after beats adjectives.
- Offer: say what the person gets and what it costs, or why now.
- Landing page: the same headline and the same offer as the ad.
What should you check in the first 14 days?
In the first two weeks your job is to watch, not to steer. Meta treats changes to targeting, creative or the optimization event as significant edits that can restart learning. Use this checklist and write down every change you make.
| When | Check | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Before launch | Test event received by browser and server, values match your shop | Fix tracking first, then publish |
| Day 1 | Ads approved, spend started | If still in review after 24 hours, check the account quality page |
| Days 2 to 3 | CPM, link click rate, landing page views vs. clicks | Big gap between clicks and page views means a slow page. Fix the page, not the ad |
| Days 4 to 7 | First conversions, learning status | No edits. Budget moves only if something is clearly broken |
| Day 7 | Cost per result per ad | Pause an ad only if it spent about 2 to 3 times your target cost with no result (rule of thumb) |
| Days 8 to 10 | Frequency and click rate trend | Add 2 to 3 new ad ideas in one batch, not one per day |
| Day 14 | Meta-reported conversions vs. real orders or leads | Decide: raise budget in steps, rework offer or page, or stop |
What are the most common beginner mistakes with Facebook ads?
- Boosting posts and calling it advertising. Likes are cheap and rarely turn into customers.
- Too many ad sets. Five ad sets at €20 a day each collect less learning than one at €100.
- Changing too early. Edits in the first 7 days restart learning and make the data useless.
- Choosing Traffic because the cost per click looks low, then wondering why nobody buys.
- Launching without testing the pixel and Conversions API.
- Narrow interest targeting on a small budget. It raises CPM and gives Meta less room to find buyers.
- Trusting Meta's reported sales blindly. Compare them with your shop or CRM every week.
Should you get help with your first campaign?
You can do all of this yourself with the steps above. If you would rather not, there are three routes: hire an agency, work with a freelancer, or use software that watches the account for you.
One option from us, for businesses that have never run ads: Kickstart, €99 one-time, 30 days, no subscription, Meta only. We build your first campaign with you, including tracking and structure, so you understand what you launched. It is meant for a clean start, not as an ongoing service.
Once ads run, Marketing AIgency's AI agents review your Meta account, look into the numbers before they propose anything and put each proposal with its reasoning into an approval queue. Nothing happens until you approve it, and new accounts start in shadow mode. Guards check budgets and ads every 30 to 60 minutes depending on the plan, around the clock. Plans are fixed monthly prices with no share of ad spend, see plans and pricing.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I spend on my first Facebook ad?
Base it on your target cost per result. One ad set needs about 50 conversions a week to leave learning, so multiply your target cost per purchase or lead by 50 for the weekly budget. If that is too high, optimize for an earlier event such as Add to cart.
Can I run Instagram ads without Facebook?
You can promote a post directly in the Instagram app, but targeting, tracking and objectives are limited. For sales or leads you need Ads Manager, which runs through a business portfolio with your Instagram account connected.
How long until Facebook ads work?
Most ads are reviewed within 24 hours. Plan for 7 to 14 days before judging results, because the learning phase needs about 50 conversions per ad set within 7 days to stabilize.
Is boosting a post the same as running an ad?
No. A boosted post is an ad, but with fewer settings. It cannot optimize for purchases or leads on your website the way an Ads Manager campaign can.
How many ads should my first campaign have?
Three to six ads in one ad set, each built on a different idea such as a testimonial, an offer and a demo. More ads with the same idea do not help Meta find new buyers.
